“Close the Gap” Iron Drill
Share
Michael Kolar demonstrates a great drill that will help you shift your weight properly on the downswing leading to crisp, consistent contact. Try this drill on the range and start striping your irons!
Daily Video Tips
Seems like this approach could easily result in a reverse pivot, something I have struggled with. Thoughts?
Hi Jim, for you I’d say start 50/50 at address, load the trail heel at the top of the swing and close the gap!
Michael,
Great tip, I was 60/40 on my right side and most misses were fat shots. It's much easier to make solid contact starting 60% on the left. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really like this drill and will help me so much.
Would it be the same for the driver in terms of keeping weight left? many thanks Rob
Hi Rob, with driver I’d start 50/50 and try to close the gap!
When I try to focus on closing the gap it seems to exacerbate my over-the-top move and causes me to hit the ball on the hosel. Any tips on how to keep the club inside while closing the gap?
Hi Steve,
Place an alignment stick or 2X4 next to the ball aiming at your target. Place it just outside the toe of your club, you should be able to swing without hitting the 2x4 or stick to keep you coming from the inside.
Great tip!
Great video and drill. I struggle with getting "stuck" in the middle of the turn and unfortunately the ball goes left with fast hands. This drill helps me to stay more centered and truly start the downswing turning INTO my left side. Thank you!
Thank you! More to come.
I have worked on this and a small adjustment to my right foot, changed a lot for me. Instead of the toe being open I point it straight perpendicular to and somehow it just made a difference in my weight shift with my irons. Not even sure why but it helped.
HI Guys, It is incredibly annoying that when you finish one video on GOLFPASS and then it automatically scrolls to the next video the volume defaults to off. I would watch the content more when I am working out, but this feature is too painful, Please pass on to programers! Thx
Can this be applied to fairway woods and irons with the ball moved slightly forward?
Yes it can David.
Great tip thank you - will give it a go as chunking is costing me a number of shots per round...
